This past Monday, Great Sage held its first baking class at the restaurant and the sweet treat focus was on cupcakes! The class was taught by our head baker, Sarah Davenport, along with her baking assistant Amanda. One of the perks of the class was being able to see all the ingredients laid out before you and have them explained thoroughly by Sarah.

How we eat is extremely important, not only for our health but also for our running performance. In the book Thrive by Brendan Brazier, Brazier outlines a series of recommendations of what people should eat before and after exercise. In past years, I’ve always gone to my mother’s house in New Jersey for Thanksgiving. This year is no different, even if it is my first vegan Thanksgiving. Since it was my first time making whoopie pies, I tried to keep it simple, and made a chocolate cake with peanut butter frosting. The pot-o-gold cupcakes were pretty...

I’ve been following a vegan diet for many years. Suddenly, over the last six months, there seems to be a lot more interest in a plant-based/ vegan diet.  Friends are asking me how to follow a vegan diet, why to do it, and how do I feel now that I’m doing it.  Newbie or “maybe” vegans often ask me, “How do you get enough protein?”  To answer that question, I wrote a whole post...

Did you know that with every bite of a meat-free meal you can help to clean the air? Beyond its harmful impacts on Earth’s water and land highlighted in my last two blogs, livestock production affects our climate and our air.

April 22, 2012

Last week, I took a look at the detrimental impact of livestock production on the nation's waters. For the second installment in this Earth Month series, let’s examine another segment of our environment on which the meat industry leaves a major footprint – our land.

Did you know that it takes 600 gallons of water to produce a single hamburger? As the world population skyrockets, so too does the need for heightened awareness of the food we consume. This month, in honor of Earth Day, I thought it would be fitting to take a look at how vegan and vegetarian lifestyles can help restore the health of our fragile planet.
